Right in line with Germany's reputation, Sascha already has her first vacation and we're putting it to use with a week on Zanzibar, Tanzania. It's only a two hour flight from Nairobi, with a stopover in Mombasa. I'm sitting on the deck of our eco-lodge Panga Chumvi which is near the town of Metemwe on the northern east coast of the island. Sascha and Gerard are swimming in the Indian Ocean, which is around 25 C, so very warm. You can only swim at high tide since the tides are very extreem and at low tid the water is a good mile out with coral and sandy banks covered with seaweed and sea urchins inbetween. we are the only ones here at the lodge at the moment, so we have the whole stretch of beach to ourselves. quite idealic! Every once in a while locals ride by on bikes, transporting fish, wood or kids. The sand is so fine and soft that it packs very hard, so hard that it's no problem riding bikes even on the dry sand.
We woke up to rain this morning, but that has cleared and it is sunny and around 30 C. It's your ideal palmtree lined tropical beach. Rebecaa, the woman who seems to be running the place, told us the beachfront property is sold by the palm tree here on the Spice Island. It's very windy, which is normal and the reason that kite surfers congregate here. And, of course there is snorkeling and diving. Later today we'll probably visit a park where the mokeys hang out.
